Three new gems for gemaker

Gemaker welcomes three new precious gems to its collection. Mick, Robyn and Sarah have expanded the team’s core expertise and strengthen our knowledge base in mining, minerals, materials and biological sciences.

Michael joins us with over 20 years experience as a senior process metallurgist with BlueScope Steel. An expert in all areas of iron and steel making Michael is in demand as an international expert in slags. He is responsible for leading new process improvements to operational efficiency. Michael was proud to recently be awarded “The John A Brodie Medal” in Chemical Engineering for the industrial application of work stemming from his PhD in Coke Ash on Blast furnace behaviour. His favourite book is “Uncle Tungsten, Memories of a chemical boyhood”, and in his spare time he builds model boats and he is quickly running out of room to showcase them.

Robyn, the ultimate team player, has enthusiastically joined gemaker as our Office Wizard after extensive travelling around Australia and the US. She really enjoys supporting teams by using her expertise to take the marketing and administrative load off others. Robyn is very proud of the projects she has been fortunate to be a part of including Charity Balls to fundraise for the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter, and event management for Australia’s Formula 1 powerboat racing circuit. Robyn said “One of my most exciting experiences was organising the Mazda Super Challenge tennis tournament featuring 8 of the top 10 tennis players in the world”. Robyn has travelled extensively, spending two years travelling and working in Europe, and also lived on a 6,000 acre cattle farm in Zimbabwe for a year. Robyn approached Gemaker’s Commercial Director to join the team as she wants to enjoy the satisfaction of helping the team get the business off the ground and support its growth. In her spare time Robyn has been known to enjoy tap dancing to keep fit.

Sarah joins gemaker with a biotechnology background and a strong interest in commercialisation of new technologies. She provides valuable support to gemaker projects by uncovering information and identifying opportunities. Sarah has worked in roles within the retail, telecommunications, travel and research sectors and worked and travelled around the UK and Europe. With particular experience in setting up industry sponsored research programs and assisting industry secure funding for research programs, Sarah’s proudest achievement has been securing substantial funding for an industry ICT research program. Whilst in the Italian Mountains, Sarah volunteered on an organic farm using sustainable farming practices to provide fresh vegetables for the local community.

Her most valuable business tip is “Don’t underestimate the ideas a network of trusted advisors can give you. One conversation can generate a simple solution”.
