Presentation AUTM Asia: The patent sales process – a case study

Athena Prib RTTP, recently attended AUTM Asia 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, April 6th-9th, 2015.

Athena presented Plenary 4: The Patent Sale Process and co-facilitated the Pre-Conference Workshop: Technology Marketing with guru Jane Muir RTTP (Immediate Past President AUTM). Many thanks to the gracious hosts Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC).

Selling university IP can be like selling ice to Eskimos. A 2012-13 Australian Bureau of Statistics report indicated only 5.9% of Australian businesses source their innovations from universities and government agencies, highlighting the need for strong business development push. This presentation talks through the sales and marketing process with reference to Australian solar technologies invented at the University of New South Wales. It includes the highs and lows, and changes to meet the needs of a predominantly off-shore market place. Fundamentally, agreements can mean very little – it’s all about the relationships and alignment of inventor and organisation goals.
