Case study: Leading university

Medical hub feasability study

The gemaker team worked with a leading Australian university to evaluate the feasibility of creating a health and medical facility and translation hub based at the university with a future value in excess of $15m.

As part of the project, gemaker undertook initial market research to identify the potential segments of the highest value and the scale of the opportunity for the university and the broader state interests. This included detailed partner interviews across industry, research and government to identify the appetite of the relevant stakeholders to support the university initiative.

gemaker also provided independent detailed cost modelling of the initial capital costs and the ongoing operational cost and funding required for the proposal to achieve break-even. With a strong understanding of the university’s risk profile and strategic motives, gemaker recommended there was a significant chance of lower-than-hoped-for uptake of translational services and thus alternate research facilities should be considered; providing the evidence needed for the university to decide the appropriate way forward.
